Short answerUse Claude Code artifacts if your whole team is on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan and only uses Claude Code. Use Overto if you mix agents, need multi-page sites, documents, files or audio, or want a free team workspace.
What each one is
Claude Code artifacts are live pages that Claude Code publishes from your session to claude.ai. A new artifact is private to you; you can share it within your organization on Team and Enterprise plans, or publish a public link. Each publish becomes a version, and Claude can read and answer comments on the page.
Overto is a private workspace that any MCP agent publishes to. Work lives in projects with their own permissions. Teammates sign in with Google, comment on passages and elements, draw on HTML pages, and hand the discussion back to their own agent, which publishes the next version.
Facts side by side
| Claude Code artifacts | Overto | |
|---|---|---|
| Plans[1] | Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise | Free (250 MB, up to 3 members, no credit card) or Enterprise by agreement |
| Agents that can publish[1] | Claude Code (CLI and desktop app) and Claude Tag sessions | Any agent host with remote MCP over HTTPS and OAuth, such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Pi, Amp |
| Session requirements[1] | A claude.ai login on the Anthropic API. Sessions using an API key, gateway token or cloud-provider credential can’t publish; not available on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry, or with CMEK, HIPAA or Zero Data Retention. Off by default in the Agent SDK, the GitHub Action and with -p. | An OAuth connection to the Overto MCP server, or a scoped personal API key for a workspace’s own endpoint |
| What you can publish[1] | One self-contained .html, .htm or .md page. Relative links don’t resolve, so multi-section content uses in-page anchors. | Markdown documents, HTML pages, multi-page static websites, files and audio |
| Size limit[1] | 16 MiB rendered page | 25 MiB per file on Free, within 250 MB of storage; larger on Enterprise |
| External resources[1] | Google Fonts and scripts from five public CDN hosts; external images and other external requests are blocked, so images are embedded | A published website can load scripts, styles, fonts and images, and fetch data, over HTTPS |
| Share inside your company[1] | Team and Enterprise: specific people or everyone in the organization; viewers sign in to claude.ai | Whole workspace, granted people and teams, or only you; viewers sign in with Google to your workspace |
| Public link[1] | Yes, no sign-in needed. On Team and Enterprise, off until an Owner enables external sharing. | Markdown documents and websites. Turned on per page by someone who can manage and publish to the project. Free includes 25,000 public-page reads a month. |
| Comments[1] | On artifacts shared within the organization. Public-link viewers don’t see or add comments. | On passages and page elements, with mentions and an inbox, for signed-in workspace members. Public-link viewers don’t see comments. |
| Agent and comments[1] | Claude reads threads and replies. From v2.1.228 the session watches the artifact and can reply on its own when an editor sends a comment to Claude. | A comment never starts an agent. You hand the discussion to your agent (Copy for agent); it reads the threads and drawings, publishes the next version and replies. |
| Drawing on the page[1] | Not described in the artifacts docs | Pen, highlight, arrow, box and ellipse marks on HTML pages, stored against the element and readable by agents as text |
| Versions[1] | Each publish is a version; the owner picks which version viewers see. Editors on Team and Enterprise. | Each publish is an unchangeable version with an optional note. A stale update is refused. Roll back with a reason; history keeps every version. |
| Live data[1] | Pages can call claude.ai MCP connectors through each viewer’s own account | Not offered; a publication is the files your agent sent |
| Find work later[1] | /artifacts list in Claude Code and a gallery on claude.ai | Search across titles, Markdown, HTML page text and PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, for people and agents (overto_search) |
| Admin controls[1] | Organization toggle, role scoping on Enterprise, connector toggle, retention policy, audit log and the Compliance API | Project roles (reader, commenter, publisher, maintainer), teams and verified-domain joining. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM and SIEM audit-log export. |

Where Claude Code artifacts are better
- Built in. Nothing to connect: Claude may publish a page on its own, and
Ctrl+]reopens it. - Live updates. Anyone with the page open sees each republish in place, which suits a status board during a long task.
- Live data. A page can call claude.ai MCP connectors through each viewer’s own account, so it shows current data rather than a snapshot.
- Replies on their own. Claude Code can watch an artifact and answer a comment sent to Claude without you asking.
- Mature admin. Retention policies, the audit log and the Compliance API cover artifacts for Team and Enterprise organizations.
- Templates. Claude Slides, Claude Design and Claude Docs templates open in their own editors and export to PowerPoint, PDF or Word.
Where Overto fits better
- More than one agent. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and other MCP hosts publish to the same workspace, so a teammate on another tool can find and revise the work. See Overto for Codex and Overto for Cursor.
- More than one page. Publish a multi-page static website where links between pages work, a Markdown document, a PDF or other file, or an audio recording.
- No Claude plan needed. Overto works through an MCP connection, and its Free plan covers a small team.
- Drawings agents can read. Reviewers mark up an HTML page with pen, highlight and shapes; your agent reads each mark as a short description tied to the element.
- Projects and search. Work is organized by project with reader, commenter, publisher and maintainer roles, and any agent can search it months later.
- One house style. Every connected agent reads your workspace’s design.md before it builds something visual.
Moving existing pages
- Connect Overto to Claude Code with the MCP URL and OAuth (setup guide).
- Give Claude Code the artifact’s URL. It reads the page and saves its full source to a local file.
- Ask Claude Code to publish that file to an Overto project. If the page uses in-page anchors for sections, you can ask it to split them into separate pages of a site.
- Share the Overto link with your team, or turn on a public link for a document or website.
Frequently asked questions
Is Overto a Claude Code artifacts alternative?
For some teams. Overto covers the same loop of publish, share, comment and revise, but for any MCP agent and for more than one page: multi-page sites, Markdown documents, files and audio. If your whole team is on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan and only uses Claude Code, the built-in artifacts are simpler.
Do I need a paid Claude plan to use Overto with Claude Code?
Overto doesn’t need a claude.ai login: Claude Code reaches it through an MCP connection you approve with OAuth. Overto’s Free plan has 250 MB, up to 3 members and no credit card. Connect your agent.
Can people outside my company see an Overto page?
Yes, if you make a Markdown document or website public. A public link shows only the current page and its files; comments, source, drafts and older versions stay private. Otherwise reviewers join your workspace and sign in with Google. Access & sign-in.
Can I use both?
Yes. Claude Code artifacts and the Overto MCP server are separate tools, and Claude Code can use both in one session. Some teams keep quick personal pages as artifacts and publish work that needs wider review to Overto.
Does Overto update a page live while the agent works?
No. Each publish creates a new version and the stable link opens the latest one. Claude Code artifacts update in place for anyone who has the page open.
How do I move an existing artifact to Overto?
Give Claude Code the artifact’s URL: it saves the page’s full source to a local file. Then ask it to publish that file to Overto. A single page publishes as is; you can also split it into several pages of a static website. Publishing & versions.
